Will Colloidal Silver Turn My Skin Blue?

What do you see when you Google “colloidal silver”? It’s a real mix. There are some results that tell you all about the myriad health benefits of silver: it’s antibacterial, antimicrobial, antifungal, great for your digestion and general healing and health. There are some that question these benefits, or whether colloidal silver is generally safe. And there are a surprising number of results that tell you something very odd: colloidal silver turns your skin blue.

Like, bright blue. Blue Man Group blue. A scary enough side effect that it can turn people off of trying colloidal silver, in spite of its health benefits.

Fortunately, this is completely untrue. If you’re using true colloidal silver, you will not turn blue. Why do people think it will? Let’s look into it.

The Blue Man

It’s a funny thing to be famous for, but even if you don’t know his name you probably remember his face. His name is Paul Karason, and his face was intensely blue.

Remember him? It was 2008 when he went on the Today show and introduced people to the idea of “silver = blueberry-face”.

Karason had been taking silver for a few years, making his own solution of it at home and taking about 10 ounces every day. He took it internally to improve his general health, and put it on his face to help with dermatitis. And he developed a condition called “argyria”: a blue-grey discoloration of the skin and mucus membranes.

A buildup of silver ions in the body causes this skin discoloration.  Those ions react when exposed to light, and form dark deposits in the skin. It’s a rare condition, but irreversible. Once you’re blue, you’re blue forever.

So having said that, how can I possibly say that taking colloidal silver won’t turn you blue? There’s medical proof that it does, surely?

Well here’s the thing. Karason wasn’t taking true colloidal silver. He was taking something slightly but crucially different: ionic silver. People use the two terms pretty interchangeably. But there’s an important difference: ionic silver will turn you blue, and colloidal silver will not.

Ionic silver

These ions are very small — so small that if  you pour an ionic solution over a semi-permeable membrane, no residue or particulate is left behind.

When these ions come into contact with cells, they have the ability to ‘steal’ an electron from those cells. Theoretically, this is a good thing. Cells with an extra electron are destroyed. This is how ionic silver solutions kill bacteria and other pathogens.

But the problem is, there’s never been a demonstration of ionic silver’s ability to kill these pathogens in the human body.

There have been a ton of studies showing that ionic silver kills bacteria on surfaces but not in human or animal bodies. In other words, there is no reason to believe that drinking it will do you any good at all.

Next, ionic silver poses a concern when it comes to safety. Because silver ions are extremely unstable, they are desperate to achieve an even number of electrons. This means that while, yes, they can steal electrons, they can also donate electrons.

…it’s okay if that sentence didn’t make any sense to you. Like I said, this is murky stuff.

Basically what that means is that if you drink them, ionic silver solutions can be gathered up and stored in your protein and fat cells. Which means you end up with a store of ionic silver particles, just hanging out in your body.

…and then your skin’s blue

It’s this collection, this hanging out, that causes argyria and turns your skin blue. And you are blue forever. Which maybe some people could carry off as a fashion statement, but probably not most of us.

The risk of this happening with any kind of silver product is very low and the amount of silver that you would need to ingest is very, very high, but studies have confirmed that it’s possible. If you take too much ionic silver supplement, it can happen.

Colloidal silver

“Colloidal silver” is a liquid that consists of silver nanoparticles, usually suspended in water. A silver nanoparticle has metallic properties and is composed of multiple silver atoms clustered together.

These nanoparticles must be at least one nanometre (nm) in diameter. Most colloidal silvers have particles that range from 1–100 nanometres in size (though they can technically be as large as 1000 nm in diameter).

Now, this is still very, very small (for comparison: a single strand of human hair is 80,000–100,000 nm wide). But! It is much larger than an ion.

So the word “colloid” (whether it’s silver or anything else) means that the substance will pass through a semipermeable membrane, but not all the way.

In other words, if you pour a colloidal silver over a semipermeable membrane, the liquid will mostly pass through, but particles will be left behind.

These particles, in addition to being larger than ions, are also much more stable. Unlike a silver ion, a metallic silver particle will not leave an electron behind in your body. But it still steals those electrons from bacteria and other harmful cells.

Here’s another difference between ionic silver and colloidal silver:  colloidal silver has been shown in studies to be effective both on surfaces and in the body. Plus, your body doesn’t metabolize these particles. You completely excrete them within 24 hours. This means that there is zero risk of accumulation — zero risk of turning blue.

Let me repeat that again for the folks in the back: colloidal silver is more stable, more effective, and not metabolized by your body. Your body will not hold on to this silver, and it will not make you turn blue. But it will kill harmful bacteria.

Choosing the right colloidal silver for you

If you’ve decided to move forward with a silver product, colloidal silver is obviously the better option.

Any of the true colloidal silver supplements on the market would be a safe choice (provided they are true colloids made to rigorous standards).

There is one colloidal silver supplement, though, that truly stands out above the rest — Panasilver. Panasilver is made using the only technology that has been shown time and again to stand up to scientific testing.

Check out our blog post on the top 5 benefits of colloidal silver here!

Plus, Panasilver’s metallic silver particles are coated with silver oxide. They work even after the first electron is stolen. They work until they are excreted.

We need more research to conclude what specific benefits can be guaranteed. But the evidence for using Panasilver as a daily immune system supporter is already very strong.

Panasilver is made using advanced, patented technology that your body will be able to benefit from safely and immediately. You and your family deserve the best, you deserve Panasilver.
