Our Favorite Flax Recipes

Oh, flax. Flax, flax, flax, flax, flax. What a wonderful seed it is.

If you’re a regular reader of this blog, you know how much the whole Activation team loves flax. You may even have read our post on our top 10 benefits of the flaxseed (if not, check it out!). This tiny seed holds omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, zinc, iron, and many other vitamins and minerals. It supports your heart, your healthy weight maintenance, and the glow of your skin, hair, and nails.

Flax also comes in three forms with their own benefits and uses in recipes: whole flaxseeds, ground flax meal, and flaxseed oil. We’ve compared the health benefits of the different forms before, but today I want to highlight each one. So here’s one great recipe per flax type, because there is no wrong way to enjoy the glories of flaxseed.

Whole Flax:  Hearty Healthy Granola

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups rolled oats
  • ½ cup chopped walnuts
  • ½ cup sliced almonds
  • ½ cup flax seeds
  • ¼ cup dried cranberries
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon melted coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

How to Make:

Preheat oven to 300 degrees. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper.

In a large bowl, stir together the oats, walnuts, almonds, flax, cranberries, and cinnamon. Drizzle honey, coconut oil, and vanilla over the dry ingredients to coat. Stir to combine.

Spread mixture out over baking sheet in one thin layer.

Bake for 15 minutes. Remove from oven and stir ingredients.

Return to oven for another 5 to 15 minutes, or until granola is golden brown.

Remove from the oven, set on a cooling rack, and let cool completely.

Break granola into chunks of desired size.

Combine with yogurt, fruit, or milk for a great breakfast, or enjoy on its own as a snack.

Ground Flax: Carrot Apple Flax Muffins

Ingredients:

  • 1 ¼ cup ground flaxseed
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • ¾ cup oat flour (grind oats in a blender or food processor until flour-like)
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ cup milk of your choice (we used almond milk)
  • ½ cup honey
  • ⅓ cup melted coconut oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanila
  • 2 cups shredded carrots
  • 2 cups shredded apple

How to Make:

Pre-heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease muffin tins or line with paper liners.

Combine all dry ingredients in one bowl. Mix well.

Combine all wet ingredients in a separate bowl. Mix well.

Add wet ingredients to dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.

Spoon batter into muffin tins—fill until three quarters full.

Bake muffins for 13-15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

Perfect Press® Flaxseed Oil: Yummy Cherry-Nut Bar

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup dried cherries (organic, if possible)
  • 1 cup shelled pistachios
  • 1 cup dates, softened
  • 1-2 tsp Perfect Press® Flax Oil

How to Make:

Put the cherries, pistachios and dates into a food processor. Pulse. When the pieces start to break down, set it to blend. Leave it for 60-90 seconds, or until everything starts to come together.

Move the mixture to a bowl, add the oil and then work the mixture with your hands to ensure it’s all mixed together properly and there are no big chunks.

Line a tray with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Put your fruit and nut mixture onto the tray and press it flat across the pan. Use your hands or a glass to ensure that it is packed down well and evenly distributed.

Put the pan in the fridge to chill for 15-20 minutes.

Cut into bars or squares and enjoy!
