Signs of an Enlarged Prostate, What to Do and Why it Matters

  1. A frequent need to urinate, particularly if the need comes on urgently, is a common sign of an enlarged prostate. According to the National Institutes of Health, the need to urinate eight or more times per day is considered frequent.
  2. Difficult or painful urination, particularly when associated with a weak urine stream is another sign of an enlarged prostate. Healthline tells us that “Increased pressure on the urethra can block the flow of urine from the bladder out through the penis. This can make it hard to start a urine stream, and it can cause a weak or interrupted urine stream, especially at the end of urination.”
  3. A sense of never fully emptying your bladder can also be an indicator of an enlarged prostate. Being unable to empty your bladder can lead to bacteria buildup and urinary tract infections, which may ultimately require surgery.
  4. Bladder and kidney issues can also signify prostate problems. You may suffer from bladder stones because of urine concentrating in one area, for instance. This can lead to infections, pain and blood in the urine. In terms of your kidneys, Healthline notes that the pressure on your bladder can damage them and infections that start in your bladder can then spread to your weakened kidneys.
  5. If you’re getting up multiple times per night to pee, this is a tell-tale sign of an enlarged prostate and one of the most ignored. If new urination habits have you up at night, it’s time to get things checked out.

I think I may have an enlarged prostate. Now what?

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms and think you may have an enlarged prostate, it’s in your best interest to seek medical attention.

For one thing, some symptoms may worsen over time. According to WebMD, the more serious your symptoms are, the more invasive the necessary treatments may be. Not only that, but an enlarged prostate could be more than just BPH. Other serious prostate issues have similar symptoms.

Before visiting your doctor, the Mayo Clinic suggests making a list of your symptoms, even symptoms that may seem unrelated. You should also make a list of any medications you are on and create a list of questions to ask your doctor. You may want to keep track of how often you’re urinating and what the experience is like each time.

Also, even if you aren’t currently having prostate issues, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re in the clear.
