Healthy Peppermint Hot Chocolate [video]

Our good friend and vlogger, Alix, has created a delicious homemade peppermint hot chocolate recipe.  She breaks the process down beautifully in her video, above. Look out for the super cute guest star that makes an appearance near the end!

We’re really excited about it because it’s so hard to resist these yummy concoctions at this time of year, but they can be pretty unhealthy (not to mention, hard on your budget).

Here’s a sneak peek at some of the advantages of Alix’s version:

No Refined Sugar

Given that refined sugar has no nutritional value and can contribute to obesity, diabetes and excess inflammation, reducing your intake is key.

Raw honey and maple syrup both contain plenty of nutrients and can have many benefits for your health. They still pose some risks if eaten too often (unlike fruit sugars they are not bound to fiber, so they can cause an insulin spike).

This recipe is still meant to be a treat, though, so we’ll focus on the immune system support and minerals that honey or maple syrup can provide… Everything in moderation, including moderation, right?

Cacao

Unlike a processed hot chocolate powder, cacao is a superfood. It’s loaded with antioxidants (even more than most fruit), making it a great support for your immune system.

Cacao is a great source of energy, it helps prevent heart disease and can even help you burn excess fat and shed unwanted pounds.

Cacao is an ideal replacement for chocolate powder (which contains refined sugar among other baddies), but you can also add it to smoothies or coffee to get the health benefits it has to offer every day.

Skip the Syrups

By leaving out peppermint syrup and flavoring her drink with a natural, organic source of peppermint, Alix once again reduces the amount of sugar in her recipe.

Plus, real peppermint has many medicinal benefits. It aids digestion, reduces pain, eases stress and supports the immune system.

Alix’s hot chocolate recipe has become a big favorite around the office this holiday season. For the cost of a few cups of the sugary stuff from our local cafe, we got enough of the ingredients to satisfy our entire team, right through ’til new year’s!
